A yellow heat warning has come into effect for the next four days as authorities warn the UK's heatwave could put additional pressure on the country's healthcare system.

Temperatures are set to spike at 31C in parts of the country this week with "many places" seeing temperatures in the mid-20s C.

The strongest warnings were issued for the East Midlands, the East of England, East Anglia and the South East which have the " potential for significant impacts to be observed across the health and social care sector due to the high temperatures".

UKHSA added the soaring temperatures could include an " observed increase in mortality across the population likely, particularly in the 65+ age group or those with health conditions, but impacts may also be seen in younger age groups".

The North West and North East of England, the West of England, the South West, and London also face an increased risk of mortality among vulnerable groups and the potential for indoor environments to become uncomfortably warm.

Liam Eslick, a meteorologist at the Met Office, reported that Monday would see predominantly dry weather with abundant sunny spells and a peak temperature of 28°C (82°F).

On Tuesday, the forecast predicts cloudy and murky conditions in western Scotland and Northern Ireland, with some showers in northern England that may become thundery.

However, most of the country will experience more sunshine with temperatures rising to the mid to high 20°C range (77°F-82°F).

Wednesday is expected to be the warmest day of the week, with temperatures peaking at 30°C (86°F) in the South East.

Thursday will continue to see widespread warmth, with some areas potentially reaching highs of 31°C.

Despite this hot spell, the weather is predicted to cool down by midweek, giving way to showers, thunderstorms, and persistent rain.

This brief period of high temperatures marks a significant change from the rainy spring experienced across the UK, which saw 32% more rainfall than average, making it the fifth wettest spring for England and the eighth wettest for Wales on record.

However, the heat is expected to be short-lived, as the high-pressure system responsible is predicted to break down, allowing cooler and more changeable conditions to return by the weekend.

Met Office operational meteorologist Honor Criswick said: "As we're pushing into next week, we're starting to see the hotter spells, but it is going to be quite brief."

Despite the wet weather, this spring has been the warmest ever recorded in the UK, with an average temperature of 13.1°C, surpassing the previous record of 12.1°C set in 2008.

Dan Rudman, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office added: “Whether or not everyone experiences heatwave thresholds, the majority of the UK will experience the highest temperatures so far this year.

“Confidence in the forecast reduces markedly from Wednesday onwards, with uncertainty in both how long the heat will last and how it will break down, which we will be keeping an eye on for the coming days. However, by next weekend, cooler, changeable conditions become more likely."

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid excessive sun exposure, and check on vulnerable neighbors during this period of elevated temperatures.
