I left Key’s colossal 2011 visual novel with very strong feelings—feelings of genuine awe and emotional catharsis, feelings of bitter disappointment and most of all a sense of sheer disbelief at what I had played. It’s admittedly quite a mess, and the baffling production choices that led to it being one are so fascinating to me that I had to cover them. But make no mistake, at the heart of that mess is not a story that “could have been” great but one that really is great in spite of everything holding it back, one that deserves to be heard.
